About Draft Tek PAIRS Functionality

Short description: Set PAIR switch to "YES" if you want to pick the best available of the two positions (SS-FS, OLB-ILB, etc.)

Long Description: PAIRS is a programming feature that allows our team correspondents to mimic a certain train of logic that a team GM may feel toward a certain position. Lets say a team wants to add depth in the defensive backfield at Safety. The GM is not really particular regarding FS or SS; he just wants to take the best Safety prospect available. He's got other needs to fill as well, so he only wants to devote one pick toward a Safety. The way our program was set up in the past, it was not possible to model this logic. You could set SS to a high priority, or FS. But if you set both to a high priority, there is a good likelihood that the program will fill two high draft picks with Safeties. By setting the SS-FS pairing to "YES", it will trigger the program to only pick one of the two. The best available.
We've identified 6 positional pairings where this one-only logic might be employed, see below. It is our correspondents who are responsible to switch the PAIRs on or off for each team. Once a selection is made, then both the positional codes will be set to P9 (very low need).

New for 2009: TRIPLES! OT-OG-OC and WRF-WRP-WRS. If OT-OG-OC is set to "YES", then once the program selects any player at either of the 3 positions, all 3 positions will be set to P9.

ODS Usage - Regarding the ODS (Online Draft Simulator) - PAIRs are not editable by the users in the current version. The value set for the Consensus Mock draft are exactly what is being used in the ODS.

About P1 Extra
This column has nothing to do with the PAIRS functioning. It is another program team input - we've placed it on this page for the time being. "P1 Extra" - the P1 priority designation is reserved for a teams most urgent need. But our computer program has reach limits. If your team picks at #20 and has a P1 need at OT, and the next available player is rated #35, do you reach and pick him?? Or do you settle for a slightly lesser need player who is a better value??
Our program uses a pre-designated "reach limit" for P1. The limit increases as the draft progresses, so the number isn't fixed. But sometimes this limit isn't good enough. Sometimes teams are so desparate to fill a need that they will apply an internal "reach limit" that seems to exceed rationality and gets the TV pundits yakking. By designating P1Extra as "YES", the reach limit will be increased by 50% only for the positions/players that have the P1 designation.
